Voices of Independence

Not Acceptable by RadicalSAHM

The Bushways Inc. slaughter house in Grand Isle VT was closed this week due to violations of federal humane treatment laws documented by an undercover Humane Society employee.  I know this kind of horrific shit goes down all over the place at greater scale and probably greater intensity but Grand Isle is my backyard so I thought it necessary to comment here.

I dare anyone who watches this video to ever buy factory meat again while still claiming to have a soul.

Video of Abused Calves at Vermont Slaughter Plant

Meat can be produced in a caring, respectful and grateful manner. There is no excuse for this kind of barbarism and anyone who buys factory meat is just as guilty as the sub-human sadists in this video.

p.s. if you won't watch the video and still buy factory meat then you are even worse.

This is a horrific story, SAHM.

And yes, as food consumers, we have an obligation to support food production options that are ethically sound.

As citizens, we have an obligation to push for food relocalization and food security policies.

Interesting that a "lapse" in federal regulatory oversight helped create this mess.

Does having a federal inspector basically say "don't tell me about the still alive calf on the pile of dead calves because I'd have to shut them down if you told me that" count as a lapse? Isn't that conspiracy of some kind? The most awful part of this (for me) is seeing how many people have come out to say they don't care about this.

Rob, you need to get in touch with Eli at Healthy Living and get some yak on the shelves!!! Speaking of Eli, I asked him if any of their meat came through this place and here is what he had to say:

We are proud to say that not one piece of meat that is sold at Healthy Living comes from Bushways. Two weeks ago (even before this story broke) I took a small group of HL staff down to the processing plants where we get most of our meat from. Over the Hill Farm in Benson, VT and Clark’s in Ferrisburg, VT. Let me tell you, I saw the entire process with my own eyes, and while slightly sad and disturbing (due to the nature of meat processing) the animals were treated with respect and care. The staff at both these companies did their job well and really cared about their jobs and the animals. At Healthy Living, we really try to make sure that your food comes from clean, respectful, reputable sources. We research this ourselves instead of taking the company’s word for it. That way; when something like this happens; we can be informed and then inform you.

Euphemism, anyone?

Email me Eli's coordinates, and we'll get some yak happening.

Our yak meat processor, by the way, is Royal Butcher on the Braintree/Randolph line. We've been on the killing floor with them on all 3 occasions, and they treat the animals respectfully right up to the moment of truth.

A nifty little family operation - we've been happy to work with them.

Yak on!
