SECEDE & SURVIVE: Vermont Secession in the News

Here are the most prominent mentions of Vermon secession that have floated in from google alerts on secession since early February.

Mostly good news - and one reminder that there’s lots of organizing to do.

Luckily the U.S. government is doing most of the hard work of deligitimatizing itself!

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Thomas Jefferson & Secession

Today would be Thomas Jefferson's 265th birthday. And while the patriarchal slave holder wasn't perfect, he did give us these immortal words from the Declaration of Independence, its second and third sentences. Read on for quotes and some good video links promoting Vermont Secession...

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Liberty and Democracy as Antidotes to Sectarian Secessionism

Bad luck continues to haunt me - including breaking my arm on black ice on Lincoln’s birthday... hmmm. Tight, 15 pound casts can really suck out one’s energy - and one handed typing pretty tiring too! But tonight I decided if I really believe in surviving through seceding, I should at least keep cracking through a blog entry.

This is a continuation of my previous entry on “Secession and Sectarianism.” It details two important antidotes to the problem of sectarian conflict among secessionists - Liberty and Democracy.

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Secession and Sectarianism

Secessionists face the problem of sectarianism both from the most rabid unionists who oppose secession on ideological grounds and, contrarily, from those who support it as a means of advancing and even imposing their sectarian agenda, be it racial, ethnic, religious or ideological. So far the Vermont secession movement only has had to deal with attacks from unionists screaming racism because of their fear and/or hatred of one of many potential sectarian groups.Concern about distrust, bigotry, sectarianism exploding into separatist violence is legitimate because throughout history such divisions have erupted into violence, sometimes among ever growing numbers of factions.

Recent examples are sectarian divisions in Yugoslavia throughout the 1990s, in Rwanda in 1994 and especially in Iraq after the 2003 United States invasion. So it is very important to build a secessionist movement that recognizes and has strategies for dealing with sectarianism.

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Benefits of Secession for Minorities

Like many Vermonters', my ancestors came over in the 1630s, to Massachusetts, and several fought in the Revolutionary War of Independence from the British Empire. And while we may be proud of that, we also cannot deny the fact New England was settled by driving off and killing the original natives. One of Vermont “Green Mountain Boys” Thomas Rowley’s most famous 18th century poems - "To Rutland Go" - reminds us of this when he writes: “This is the noble land by conquest won, Took from a savage band by sword and gun, We drove them to the west, they could not stand the test.” So just like southerners who may support states rights and refer to the legalistic rights of the confederate states also should be careful to make it clear that slavery was an abomination, those who identify closely with the founders of most of our states must not forget to mention that our land was “colonized” through theft from the natives, most of whom died in the process. And that’s just the first thing to do when we promote the benefits of radical political decentralism, and its strategy secession, to minorities in North America. A longer list follows.

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Secessionist Theory and News

Just in case you all want to look at some secessionist theory from someone else besides yours truly here is a listing of links, plus a couple books you might consider picking up. Plus links to and brief descriptions of a couple of secession news items of note. Some exciting stuff, especially for policy wonks! Check it out.

SECEDE AND SURVIVE: Macho Sectarianism Among Libertarian Secessionists

In a day when any anonymous ass can start a blog and libel people as racists, nazis, pedophiles, democrats or republicans, it can be hard to take any exposes about alleged bigotry seriously. On the other hand, the mainstream news is filled with Bill and Hillary obviously trying to undermine Barak Obama on racial grounds, golf magazines that adorn their covers with nooses to illustrate a story about a sports caster's lynching joke, and Mike Huckabee pandering to South Carolinians who like the confederate flag by talking about using a pole on those who would criticize his state flag. So racism and bigotry do remain a part of the national, as well as the secessionist, dialogue.

Hopefully I’ll soon finish my next entry about why secession is good for racial and other minorities, in this country and worldwide. This time around I’ll just describe and quote from recent entries at my personal blog about how macho sectarianism among pro-secession libertarians has been more trouble than its worth over the last twenty years.

SECEDE & SURVIVE: Let's Dissolve the USofA by Carol Moore

I'm back! After 4 weeks of probable walking pneumonia which my roommate brought back from an operation and overnight at the hospital. The hospital tried to charge his insurance company $42,000 just for the overnight, not including the operation! They settled for $18,000. But let's not start on the failings of our big government managed health care system.

Anyway, I've got a couple new articles cooking up on the stove, so today I'm just going to include some quotes from and a link to another article. The other day I read somewhere frenzied criticism of Thomas Naylor for not just talking about Vermont secession - but about dissolving the United States government. Hadn't the author ever heard of anarchism? Not to mention radical political decentralization? Well here's less than 500 words of retired Professor of Finance Michael S. Rozeff’s manifesto On Dissolving the United States published today. Enjoy!

SECEDE AND SURVIVE: Holiday Cheer - Lakotan's "Secede" & No Nations! No Nukes! Video by Carol Moore

I was just thinking I should come up with some cheery entry for this blog when this came across the Secession@Yahoogroups.Com news wire. Descendants of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse break away from US. While it's not technically legally secession, but renouncing treaties, it shows that ideas about, and demands for, individual and group rights to independence do continue to expand despite government attempts to keep us oppressed, obedient servants. Most relevant details enclosed. Check out whole article. Also see my three new music videos linked at my blog. My 1982 song No Nations! No Nukes! should be of special interest. And check out the Merry Solstice! Video.

SECEDE AND SURVIVE: Secession in the Worldwide News by Carol Moore

One of my Google Alerts is for “secession” and “secessionist.” I get anywhere from 5 to 20 stories a day about dozens of movements all over the world. Just to give Vermont secession a context, I thought I'd excerpt from and comment upon a few recent stories about proposed, threatened or ongoing secession movements in Nigeria, Bosnia, Kosovo, Taiwan, Nepal, Israel and, of course, the United States. Plus a comment about each, within the context of secessionist theory, ethics and practice.
