In 1976, Ernest Callenbach wrote a wonderful although in places somewhat corny novel about a move by Northern California, Oregon, and Washington to secede from the United States and create an ecological ("sustainable" in modern parlance) utopia - an "Ecotopia." He sought a publisher in vain, and finally published it himself. It went on to sell more than a million copies, and became a classic of the speculative futures literature.
Ernest Callenbach died at the age of 83 on April 16th.
His writings have meant a lot to me, so I just posted this article at the Inter States site: "Requiem for Ernest Callenbach." May he rest in peace.
I just read that Ernest Callenbach, author of Ecotopia and many other works, died on April 16th of cancer...
What a year it has been. If we think back to just over a year ago… perhaps 14-15 months … what of major importance has happened or changed? What had we never heard of in early 2011, yet seen emerge as an important and even world-changing event or theme of the year since?
Here are a few items:
- The Japanese tsunami and nuclear catastrophe
- The Arab Spring, civil war in Libya, the Syrian civil war…
- The European sovereign debt meltdown
- The devastating tornado outbreaks in the US Midwest
- Record-breaking flooding and tropical cyclones in Australia
- Record-breaking Mississippi floods
- Wildfires and droughts in the US Southwest
- Hurricane Irene’s destruction in the US Northeast, especially Vermont
- The Occupy movement

A very large rally in support of Vermont's democracy and sovereignty in the face of Entergy Corporation's defiance is just winding up as I post these photos. Speakers included Vermont Governor and Windham County native Peter Shumlin, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, Vermont Attorney-General Bill Sorrell, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Brattleboro native Jody Williams, State Senator Jeanette White, State Rep. Sarah Edwards, and Citizens' Awareness Network executive director Deb Katz. A message from US Congressman Peter Welch was read. All spoke out against Entergy's untrustworthiness and recalcitrance in opposing the will of Vermont's voters and democratically elected government by refusing to close the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, whose...
In the face of Entergy Corporation's recalcitrance, threats by Monsanto to sue Vermont, and other inappropriate interference by corporate interests in Vermont's affairs, there will be a rally on the Common in Brattleboro this Saturday, April 14, noon to 2 pm, with Governor Peter Shumlin, Senator Bernie Sanders, Attorney-General William Sorrell, and other speakers.
We are Vermont Strong!
Please read Dan DeWalt's startling op-ed piece from today's Brattleboro Reformer:
State United
Its time for Vermonters to draw the wagons into a circle. Aided and abetted by the NRC, Entergy Nuclear of Louisiana is trying to crush state sovereignty in the federal courts. Salivating in the wings, Monsanto is now threatening to sue the state because House...
Truth or Duh – Why Wall Street Doesn’t Do Climate Science
Jeremy Grantham of GMO came to our MBA program to speak last week. The title of his talk was “Irrational Avoidance of the Unpleasant: Perspectives on Investing, Resource Limitations & Global Warming.” It was a fantastic, well-attended talk by one of the most respected investment advisers in the world today, but he accidentally ended up almost duplicating one of his major criticisms of the mentality of Wall Street: climate change denial or willful ignorance.
He never meant to, of course. Look at his title! A point early in his talk was that, while 97% of scientists world-wide agree that human-induced global warming is taking place, the ratio is almost the reverse among Wall...
I just posted the article below in our MBA program's blog. I personally believe that implementing Hsiao's version of single-payer health care, closing Vermont Yankee, and phasing out oil for heating and most transportation are three absolutely necessary steps for Vermont in our quest to create long-term, sustainable prosperity, and preserve our dignity and independence. They all require tackling and overcoming dominant American economic interests. Vermont must do all three, fast. This article focuses on certain aspects of the first one.

FYI: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-09/entergy-boss-points-to-federal-say-on-nuke-plant.html
If the NRC rules in Entergy's favor, pitting Federal against Vermont jurisdiction, what next? The pressure will be intense. Who will back down? Will Vernon look like Tahrir Square? The clock is ticking.
Seize the High Ground, Vermont
With an expert team from Harvard advising Vermont on how to proceed toward single-payer health care, and the most solidly progressive political alignment in Vermont in almost a decade, my inclination is to hold my breath and see what emerges. I almost don’t want to jinx it. At the same time, I am moved to speak out urgently in favor of Dr. Hsao’s public/private single-payer recommendation, and hope that we can all overcome our emotional and ideological reservations and support this very significant step forward for Vermont’s society and economy.
I spent 14 years living in Sweden, where our three kids were born, and got to know the universal health care system there quite well. My wife is British, and...
If you read nothing else about the current debates about whether America is in economic, social, and imperial decline, read these two lengthy articles in Germany's Der Spiegel (online English edition) and in The Nation Online:
Alfred McCoy, The Decline and Fall of the American Empire: http://www.thenation.com/article/156851/decline-and-fall-american-empire
Der Spiegel (staff writers), A Superpower in Decline - Is the American Dream Over: http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,726447,00.html
To ponder: will America experience a return to prosperity, a quiet normalization of current circumstances, a soft landing, or a hard landing?
The last 100 years is full of examples of wrenching reassignments on the world stage: Great...
