"The Inaugural Public Banking in America conference has begun. We have a sold out crowd of participants, an excellent line up of speakers and you can watch all sessions live on Ustream! Ethan Allen gave us a brillian exhortation last night, sharing his perspective on public banking with the crowd packing Fergie's Pub in Philadelpha."

I spoke with Steve Zind yesterday about the F-35 coming to Burlington. Please have a listen!
New F-35 Jets Likely To Bring More Noise To Burlington Area
We had a long conversation and I've done my best to rescontruct what I said and I've elaborated on some points that I missed:
One of the prevailing sentiments expressed by supporters of having the F-35 based with the Vermont Air National Guard is that it represents a show faith in the exemplary service of this unit and I don’t think anyone can argue with that. However, we must ask ourselves if these men and women are well served by being delivered a plane that is not designed for modern threats and which will be technologically uncompetitive by the time it comes out of development 5 years...

Notwithstanding the fact that the United States is the largest, wealthiest, most-powerful, most materialistic, most environmentally irresponsible, most racist, most militaristic, most violent empire in history and has shown little or no concern for the distribution of income, wealth, or political power among its citizens, nine years of trying to convince skeptical Vermonters of the merits of secession as an alternative to empire have proven to be quite challenging. Secession is a very tough sell in Vermont and elsewhere.
Abraham Lincoln really did a number on us 150 years ago. He convinced most Americans on the political Right as well as the Left that secession is a complete anathema. Secession is thought by most to be immoral, illegal,...

"Owned & Operated is a mosaic of the world through the lens of the internet. Showing our lives as consumers, under the thumbs of privileged individuals and their methods of control.
But the world is awakening, and the experience is something outside the normal rules of social interaction, causing excitement in those who are not served by the current system... and fear in those who are pampered by it.
This documentary attempts to present these events using the video, audio and written content uploaded to the internet by the collective human consciousness comprised of every individual participant.
Oh yes, change is coming... and it will be more dramatic than anybody can imagine."

It appears we were just one more meeting (and 2 pizzas, one growler and a nice Beaujolais...) away from finalizing our new COOP mission statement. Our Board members think this statement very nicely distills what we are trying to do here. If you agree that our goals are laudable and viable, please join our merry band and help us 'shrug off' the burdens of Empire.
Vermont Commons News Cooperative Mission Statement:
The Vermont Commons: Voices of Independence COOP provides an organizational news model that is transparent and equitable, one that balances crowdsourcing of actions, access to leadership positions, and governance by an accountable decision-making body.
The Vermont Commons: Voices of Independence COOP will enable contributors here...

Lots of talk today about this article, published in Seven Days, which details what uses the $30 billion Vermonters are kind enough to send the federal government every year go to. SURPRISE! The single greatest recipient of our largess, by a good margin, is military spending!
In fact, so much of it goes to military spending that it kind of boggles the mind that we spend any time at all talking about any other kind of spending. Let your mind be additionally boggled that the department responsible for this spending has never had an audit because their books are so screwed up (or non existent…."when the money comes rolling in you don’t keep books, you can tell you've done well by the happy grateful looks") they can't even begin to perform one...
