What is the world’s most powerful and violent “ism”? The question will summon the usual demons, such as Islamism, now that communism has left the stage. The answer, wrote Harold Pinter, is only “superficially recorded, let alone documented, let alone acknowledged,” because only one ideology claims to be non-ideological, neither left nor right, the supreme way. This is liberalism.

In his 1859 essay, On Liberty, to which modern liberals pay homage, John Stuart Mills described the power of empire. “Despotism is a legitimate mode of government in dealing with barbarians,” he wrote, “provided the end be their...

This year we welcome guest speakers:

LIERRE KIETH, author of DEEP GREEN RESISTANCE (2011): "The Second Vermont Republic takes its place in a long line of movements for justice that were willing to face the nature of power and then face it down. The planet does not simply need more gardens; it needs resistance against the forces that have been plundering our collective garden for 10,000 years." -Lierre Kieth

MORRIS BERMAN, author of WHY AMERICA FAILED: THE ROOTS OF IMPERIAL DECLINE (2012) Vermont independence "is a fascinating possibility, the more so if secession turns out to be contagious, and not just...

In an age of gross zeitgeist dysfunction -- when untruth, delusion, and deception rule - politics is mere advertising, which is to say surface shimmer playing on the public's wish-fulfillment fantasies. The trouble at this moment in history is that the American public's wishful fantasies are inconsistent with the circumstances that reality offers to us and the choices for action that they present.

President Obama's historical role will be seen as a wish-fulfillment totem for late 20th century progressive liberalism - the first black president. The Democratic Party apotheosized the genial young lawyer...

When Canada's left-of-center New Democratic Party (NDP) invited me to testify before a mock hearing (on Parliament Hill with only NDP members present) addressing the country's...

Tampa- Despite a seductive tango with Hurricane Isaac and more than a few opportunities to cut a rug with the Tampa Police Department’s $50 million budget, the Occupy movement turned out in Tampa with remarkable enthusiasm and endurance... despite less than remarkable numbers.

The view of Occupy presented in the sweltering heat of South Florida is one that is full of radical contradictions and escapes any easily gained assumptions or analyses.

Only a few Occupiers actually showed up (compared to thousands at Chicago’s hosting of...

2011 was the year that the US achieved unprecendented victory in its campaign of death and destruction in the middle east.  The wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, and threats against Iran have so destabilized the middle east that US military companies tripled their arms sales in 2011.  According to the Huffington Post US arms sales went from 21.4 billion in 2010 to 66.3 billion in 2011, the most successful year ever for the US arms industry representing 3/4 of all arms sales worldwide!...

Facts:

1. Geo-engineering, weather control, is a real science that Gates and others say is needed to fight climate change
2. Chem-trails (aerosol reflective metals, aluminum, strontium, barium) are real, not a secret. Supposedly to reflect sun out, reduce warming, but results show they may also increase greenhouse effect at night).
3. HAARP is real: sends concentrated beams of micro-waves into the atmosphere, causing condensation/precipitation, or evaporation, depending on what chemicals are in the atmosphere.
4. Gates is an investor in Monsanto...

Reality is the only party with an agenda consistent with what is actually happening in the world. Reality doesn't need to drum up dollar donations from anyone. Reality doesn't have to pander to any interest group or subscribe to any inane belief system. Reality doesn't even need your vote. Reality will be the winner of the 2012 election no matter what the ballot returns appear to say about the bids of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to lead the executive branch of the government.

In the vicious vacuum that national party politics has become, the Republicans and Democrats are already dead....

Roger Pion, the self-employed Vermont farmer who rolled a 20,000 pound tractor over seven police cars in early August, was released Auguust 30 after four weeks in jail. Asked by a Fox 44 news reporter if he had any regrets, the taciturn Pion said, “No.” http://www.fox44abc22yourvoice.com/story/19420132/roger-pion?clienttype=printable

Pion (pronounced PEE-on) has become something of an internet folk hero since he used his father’s tractor to crush five Orleans Sheriff’s...

The Vermont Department of Health is inviting public comment now through August 31 (today!) on the draft goals and objectives for Healthy Vermonters 2020, a supposedly comprehensive set of 10-year goals for supposedly "improving the overall health of the state."

How will the proposed goals actually improve the actual health of Vermonters? The answer is, it does not matter. This plan is part of a larger CDC agenda, an overreach into our state and into our lives so that we may all be subject to their so-called "...

Dear ORION,

We encourage our neighbor Sue Halpern, one of Vermont's best wordsmiths, to probe more deeply next time she interviews our junior Senator Bernie Sanders. Her simplistic portrait of "Bernie" masks more disturbing elements embedded in his so-called "Man of the People" record.

For example, Bernie’s campaign literature decries corrupt and wasteful military spending. He says “we have tripled military spending since 1997, we must take a hard look at a bloated and wasteful Defense Department”. Yet he supports the Vermont National Guard receiving 18-24 more F-35 fighter planes! The F-35 program is THE poster child for...

Petition of Grievances

We, citizens of this American land, haunted by the nihilism of separation, meaninglessness, and powerlessness, subsumed by political elites who use corporate, state, and military power to manipulate our lives, pawns of a global system of dominance and deceit in which transnational megacompanies and big government control us through money, markets, and media, sapping our political will, civil liberties, collective memory, traditional cultures, sustainability, and independence, and as victims of affluenza, technomania, cybermania, globalism, and imperialism, do issue and proclaim this...

If you've been thinking a credit union is just another kind of bank, look out, because here come the State of Vermont to accuse you of language abuse, not yet a felony, but subject to civil penalties.

More precisely, the Vermont Dept. of Financial Regulation decided in June that the Vermont State Employees Credit Union (VSECU) had to stop using the word "banking" to describe the activities of the credit union, even though many of those activities are identical to those performed by banks.

The VSECU, whose website is headed "Redefining Banking," was started in 1947.  In the eyes of Financial Regulation...

Could it be possible to hold a statewide convention on political independence in a state house chamber, in a state where the governor, the lieutenant governor, the Congressional delegation, and the vast majority of state legislators are all unconditional apologists for the U.S. of Empire and vehemently opposed to state self-determination? “Only in Vermont,” explains Vermont Commons editor Juliet Buck. “In fact, there is no charge for the use of the most prestigious venue in the entire Green Mountain State, because it happens to be the People’s House.”

On Friday, September 14, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm, Vermont citizens...

Police-initiated violence that lasted less than three minutes on July 29 in Burlington, Vermont, provoked weeks of complaint, and has now led police to produce an 83-page “preliminary after action report” that argues that the officers involved “showed exceptional professionalism under adverse, complex, and rapidly evolving circumstances.”

Friends and Neighbors,

Many of you are concerned about the F-35 being based in Vermont. The best way to encourage debate on this matter (with a Governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative who have indicated support for the F-35 before any of the important facts were known) would be to take one of the following actions at the primary elections August 28, 2012.

1. PROGRESSIVE: The coalition strongly urges this action, because there are many openings on this ballot and therefore good chances to elect a nominee. Please vote in the primary election on the Progressive ballot, including the...

This performance is 'The Narrative of Ethan Allen’s Captivity' written in 1778 by Colonel Allen.

During the Revolutionary War, and after the battles of Lexington and Concord, Ethan Allen captured Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775. This was the first fort taken by the Americans. On September 24, 1775 in Montreal, Canada, Ethan was captured and kept on British prison ships. The British barely kept him alive, then two and a half years later he was exchanged for a colonel and was set free.
