Reflecting back on 2010 I find myself grateful for many learning experiences, inspirations and opportunities.

1. As an executive at a national solar power company in 2010 I realized that we need to abandon climate change as a motivating factor regarding our energy systems. Why?

- Climate change is a polarizing debate that is sucking up endless amounts of human energy to no avail, and because there are actually many unanswered questions about the impact of C02 emissions on the environment. (for example, are you causing climate change with every breath you exhale, and should you be taxed for this?)

- The proposed carbon taxing/trading would not necessarily do anything to expand investment in clean renewable energy...

In 1985 I had the unique privilege of working with geographer William Bunge on the Nuclear War Atlas, a peace project, published by Basil Blackwell of Oxford. After that we lost touch; Bill was always very Left, and I'm neither Left nor Right. I felt that the USSR and US were both empires. Empires and their ideologies come and go. Just found this recent essay of Bill's which puts both Vermont and Québec nationhood in perspective as distinct American nations. I'm now actively trying to track Bill Bunge down; if...

As we approach the 2011 new year, we are pleased to welcome two more independent-minded Vermont bloggers to our growing blogroll ranks.

Pete Garritano ran for lieutenant governor as an independent this last election, and will be blogging with us under the VERMONT UNCENSORED moniker. Simha Bode is a 7th generation Vermonter who works on issues of peace and justice, and will be blogging with usunder the HAVEN OF VERMONT moniker.

Welcome, gentlemen, and thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.

Free Vermont, and long live the UNtied States!

Radicalized Christians are being ignored by the mainstream media.  They spend their days bombing banks, killing cops or flying planes into government buildings, born out of a hatred for U.S. government policies, so why are they given such little coverage compared to radicalized Muslims?

Radicalized Christians have a much higher success ratio than radicalized Muslims; their bombs actually explode, so why do they get slighted when it comes to front page glory?

Corporate profits have soared since the invention of Muslim terrorists. We all know who runs the country and...

We'll be posting infrequently through January 3, 2011.

Happy holidays to all - free Vermont, and long live the UNtied States!

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/obama-is-a-hostage-but-not-to-the-gop-2010-12-14 New York Times columnist Frank Rich branded himself a new kind of wikileaker in his column, “All the President’s Captors.” Rich diagnosed Obama using “an article titled ‘Understanding Stockholm Syndrome’ in the online archives of The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin. It explains that hostage takers are most successful at winning a victim’s loyalty if they temper their brutality with a bogus show of kindness. Soon enough, the hostage will start concentrating on his captors ‘good side’ and develop psychological characteristics to please them, ‘dependency; lack of initiative; and an inability to act, decide or think.’” There, in a few short...

Editor's Note: Imagining the Federal Reserve as a "tool in the service of the people" may seem laughable to many, including this secessionist, on even-numbered days. But let's just say for a minute that Bernanke and Co. could be convinced...

We’ve seen behind the curtain, as the Fed waved its magic liquidity wand over Wall Street. Now it’s time to enlist this tool in the service of the people.

(Read more at Ellen Brown's blog.)

The Fed’s invisible hand first really became visible with the bailout of AIG. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in June 2009:

"Many of us were, shall we say, if not surprised,...

Net Neutrality is a defining issue of our time. It's essential to keep the Internet free and open, letting users access all content without restrictions, limitations, or discrimination, maintaining an online level playing field for everyone.

Net Neutrality

Three earlier articles addressed the issue, the most recent accessed here.

It's the essence of democratic free speech. Without it, the Internet will resemble cable TV, letting corporate predators game the system, deciding what web sites, content and applications...

ORIGINAL EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE: ORIGINAL EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE: ORIGINAL EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE America’s military and economic empire could collapse at any time, but predicting the precise day, week or month of its potential demise is unattainable, according to a former New York Times war correspondent who spoke with Raw Story. “The when and how is very dangerous to predict because there’s always some factor that blindsides you that you didn’t expect,” Pulitzer-winning journalist Chris Hedges said in an exclusive interview. “It doesn’t look good. But exactly how it plays out and when it plays out, having covered disintegrating societies, it’s impossible to tell.” He explained that he learned this lesson as events unfolded around him in the fall of...

You know you are in trouble when you make a full-length Hollywood feature film, and your entire story hinges on the activities of an animatronic talking mouse.

 Let me explain.

I loved C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" as a kid. I remember, when I first learned that Fox and Walden Media were planning...

Face-melting excitement in Vermont's Mad River Valley yesterday.

A good friend's old Volvo caught on fire while she was driving downtown - electrical trouble - and burst into flames, melting in minutes into the asphalt.

Fortunately, she was OK, the car needed to be replaced anyway, and no kids or material...

Before dying, Richard Holbrooke admitted it, saying "You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan." The Washington Post reinterpreted it, saying:

"Holbrooke's death is the latest complication in an effort plagued by unreliable partners, reluctant allies and an increasingly skeptical American public."

AfPAK and US Empire

They're not alone. Include noted analysts, administration officials, the influential Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Pentagon top brass. An earlier article discussed it,...

Think about how you'd feel if you had an invitation from the New York Times, putting you among "experts" offered to contribute 300 words.

12/9 6:45 p.m. From New York Times to Susan Ohanian: We are putting together a discussion on our online opinion forum, Room for Debate, about stress among high school students. These discussions are meant to be mini op-eds (about 300 words by a variety of experts addressing a specific question.

Here's the question: A new documentary, "Race to Nowhere," is hitting a nerve among parents across the country who are worried about the levels of stress that...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDp1izlMQT0&feature=player_embedded Transcript: WikiLeaks release of classified information has generated a lot of attention in the past few weeks. The hysterical reaction makes one wonder if this is not an example of killing the messenger for the bad news. Despite what is claimed, the information that has been so far released, though classified, has caused no known harm to any individual, but it has caused plenty of embarrassment to our government. Losing our grip on our empire is not welcomed by the neoconservatives in charge. There is now more information confirming that Saudi Arabia is a principal supporter and financier of al Qaeda, and that this should set off alarm bells since we guarantee its...

In case you haven't yet heard Senator Sanders hold forth on class warfare in the U.S. of Empire, here's the clip, which has already generated more than 600,000 views.

Your thoughts?

There have been a lot of posts about the end of the empire lately. This one is dedicated to the memory of Chalmers Johnson.

"PEAK EMPIRE" Predicting Collapse
In February, 2009 Dmitry Orlov said the following about predicting the collapse of the US empire: “I have learned from experience – luckily, from other people’s experience – that being a superpower collapse predictor is not a good career choice. I learned that by observing what happened to the people who successfully predicted the collapse of the USSR. Do you know who Andrei Amalrik is? See, my point exactly. He successfully predicted the collapse of the USSR. He was off by just half a decade. That was another valuable lesson for me,...

Posted December 8, 2010 at www.carolynbaker.net I read with great fascination, Rob Hopkins’ critical response to Michael Brownlee’s November 26 article “The Evolution of Transition In The U.S.” In it, Rob begins by listing a number of criticisms of Transition in recent years and adds that criticism of Transition has been a positive process which has helped to shape what it is today. However, he finds Michael’s proposal to put the sacred at the center of Transition “concerning.” Despite my deep respect for Rob and the enormous legacy to which he and Transition in the UK have given birth, I cannot be silent about his concerns. The first seems to be Michael’s assertion that Transition initiatives in the U.S. must “declare independence,”...
